PhysGen General Information
ENU Data
The phenotyping
The screening protocol for the ENU mutant rats provides 84 phenotypic measurements of heart,
lung, vascular, renal and blood measurements. All measurements are made in each rat over
a three week period. Both male and female rats are studied to screen for gender differences.
All rats are put through the movement & respiratory protocol while on a low salt diet
(Purina 5001). After this part of the screening protocol, the mutant rats with BN or
FHH genetic background are switched to a high salt (4% Dyets) diet for two weeks prior
to the remainder of the screening protocol. The mutant rats with a SS genetic background
are kept on a low salt diet for the entire screening protocol.

Consomic Data
The phenotyping
component provides 213 phenotypic measurements of heart, lung, vascular,
and blood function. Each strain enters the protocols allowing for
the functional characterization of both genders and parental control
rats over a 5-week period. The data will provide the functional
information required to link each of the 21 rats chromosomes to
cardiovascular, pulmonary, renal and blood function.
